[pc1209-01] Fosel - The Difference Engine

front cover

Acoustic proportions defined by complex logarithms: The Difference Engine derives its name from the first mechanical calculating machine proposed by Charles Babbage in 1822, which can be considered the first computer created by men. Kurt Nimmo, the person behind Fosel, hints at the fact that the music on his latest release is computer-generated, stressing the man versus machine idiom. A monstrous machinery dominates the barely lit, dusty hall with its metallic wheels, columns and sector gears. Tabs tripping the carry lever as it passes from nine to zero, whilst spiral arms grasp at the shiny wheels to increment their position by one. Almost unnoticed, towards the humid stone walls, unfold the sound waves and extend to the vertical barriers that limit the building's capacity.

Focusing on the music, The Difference Engine is characterised by a descriptive approach. That is, rather than developing a string of consecutive events, Fosel shows a single impression - the frozen still - from all angles in order to unveil the last detail. This shifts the action from perception to reflection, from the actual tone sequence to its internal resonance and reverberation. There is a strong suggestive quality within those slowly shifting aurora figures. Carefully crafted, they still offer enough variety to prevent dull monotony, without giving away the colours of the night. For how long would The Difference Engine continue calculating converging polynomials and spinning its single-high teeth? This question seems to fade as time slows down to a grinding halt and gives way to eternal gloom.

[pc1109-01] Synflict - Prismatine

front cover

Having spent some time creating cover artwork for netlabel artists under the alias Synflict, Marco Cervellin and Olliver Wichmann decided to team up together for creating music together for a change. Initially based on some sound fragments lying around, the tracks quickly evolved to what has finally become Prismatine, their debut release as Synflict. The music features huge contrasts (consonance versus dissonance, attack versus decay) and pauses as a means to interrupt a continious flow and could be filed under electroacoustic, but also reaches out to drone and dark ambient territory on occasion. Apart from digital processing artifacts, feedback, beeps and blirps, they also incorporate natural sound sources to create a dense soundscape of sonic events.

It's available also on digipack limited edition trough our online shop http://www.chewz.net/shop

Composed and recorded between the end of 2008 and the beginning of 2009, Third Segment emphasize even more on the basic idea of 3eem: electronic rhythmic structures, alteration of sound sources, textures of saxophone and guitar between minimal riffs and short glimpses into improvisation, a sort of tribal rite making its way, overlapping between the certainty of live sound and its deviated interpretation.

All music written and composed by 3EEM.

Valerio Zucca Paul: electronics.

Fabrizio Bazzoni: tenor sax, electric guitar.

Danilo Corgnati: electric guitar, effects.

Nothing reacts. Juste une bougie. Et la nuit supplémentaire. Seule une toute petite tortue s’est retournée. The begginnig of nowhere. Quelqu’un l’a vu s’étaler de toute part. The smoke flew through the window, without a sound. Les écailles rirent. In a deep and thud swamp of stars. Ces escaliers interminables rirent. Holding the coulds in one hand. How to get there ? Des lueurs encore.
Des désirs encore. L’as tu vu passer ? Inside and between a dot. The past of a print. Again. The future of a print.

All these have been recorded in 2008 and 2009. Totally improvised, Totally untouched.

JNN068 dxiv (aka Choenyi) - Enviroments for Izzy's

JNN release page
Sonic squirrel page

Founder and curator of the Stereo-Type netlabel, KJ began producing electronic in 1999, having always played conventional instruments. Obsessed with sound, he has graphed charts of frequencies which cross reference chromatics vs. brain wave ranges and has used these maths in extensive self-experimentation, applying the results to composition. As “choenyi” and “Echo Yin” he has released varietey of netlabels since 2006. The alias “dxiv” predates these for many years and implies works unfettered by an imagination of pleasing any (mythologized) dancefloor.
